The Back Drop

"The Back Drop" is a group art exhibit which features photos, paintings, drawings, collages and ceramics that focus on altered landscapes by Meridith Coen, Sarah Marraffino, and Alyson Silva. Inspired by foreign and domestic landscapes and personal experience, their work captures the essence of place and identity. The imagery is meant to inspire thought, question what is taken for granted and discover beauty in alternate forms.

Detachment & Recollection

"the gallery," the exhibition of Brittany Scroggins and Liz Williams's "Detachment & Recollection" will be open from now until October 8, 2009. The gallery hours are Monday thru Thursday 9am-9pm and Friday thru Sunday 9am-6pm.

This exhibit features work from both Brittany Scroggins and Liz Willams.

The closing reception will be held on October 8, 2009 from 7pm-9pm on the second floor of the Reitz Union in "the gallery." Refreshments will be available. This event was sponsored by the Center for Student Activities and Involvement and the University of Florida.

Shifting Perspective

the gallery is hosting a new exhibition, Shifting Perspective now until September 25th. the gallery is open from 9 AM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday, as well as Friday through Sunday 9 AM to 6 PM. Please join us in the Gallery on the second floor of Reitz Union for our exhibition. The reception will be held on the evening of Thursday, September 24th from 7 to 9 PM. This exhibit is sponsored by the Center for Student Activities and Involvement at the University of Florida.

Ron Haase: My Mind's Eye

“My Mind's Eye”, an exhibit of mixed media sculpture and paintings presented by University of Florida Professor Emeritus, Ron Haase. As an architect, Haase is well known for his Cracker-style homes, and his research in the field led to his popular book, Classic Cracker, published by Pineapple Press. From this design background, Haase approaches art as an opportunity to simplify both nature and man-made form to their basic fundamentals. In this exhibit, we see new work in sculpture in which Haase revisits familiar architectural forms of barns, adobe houses, and classic Florida architecture. This exhibit will be on display from January 6 through 23, 2008, with a reception held on Thursday, January 15, from 7-9pm. Refreshments will be served.

Perspective: In a New Light

Exposure, The UF Photography Club presents “Perspective: In a New Light”, a collection of photographic prints exploring personal growth through the context of a changed perspective: the world as viewed through the eyes of a photographer and artist. This exhibit will be on display from October 6-18, with an opening held on Thursday, October 9 from 7-9pm. Exhibit is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

Of a Master's Hand

“Of a Masters Hand”, an exhibit featuring select pieces from the Alfred Browning Parker architectural collection. The artist, Alfred Browning Parker, currently teaching at the UF School of Architecture, is one of the remaining living architects from the famous Modern Architectural movement in Florida during the 1950’s and 1960’s. The collection will feature his hand-renderings, mid-century sculpture, and pieces of furniture. This exhibit will be on display from September 22- October 3, 2008, with an opening reception held on Monday, September 22nd from 7-9pm. Exhibit is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

Mi Tierra Querida

University of Florida Fine Arts Drawing graduate, Natalie Richardson presents “Mi Tierra Querida”, a collection of mixed media topographical drawings based on the agricultural fields of the mountainous areas of Bolivia. This exhibit will be on display from September 8-19, with a closing reception held on Thursday, September 18 from 7-9pm. Exhibit is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

Natural Curiosity

“Natural Curiosity”, a stunning collection of drawings and paintings exhibiting the intrinsic connection between humans and nature, presented by University of Florida sophomore, Alicia Korn. This exhibit will be on display from August 25 – September 5, with an opening reception held on Thursday, August 28 from 7-9pm. Exhibit is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

RETROSPECTIVE: Artwork by Andy Krone

“RETROSPECTIVE: Artwork by Andy Krone”, a collection of paintings and sculpture from local artist and University of Florida alumni, Andy Krone. This exhibit will be on display from July 28 – August 8, with an opening reception held on Friday, August 1st, from 7-9pm. Exhibit is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

Fabricated Faces - Raquel Kalil

“Fabricated Faces”, a unique collection of whimsical, colorful paintings from University of Florida sophomore Raquel Kalil. This exhibit will be on display from July 14 - July 25, with an opening reception held on Friday, July 18th, from 7-9pm. Exhibit is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

University of Florida Physical Plant Staff member Millard Griffis presents, “Photography by Millard Griffis” a retrospective collection of large format black and white photography spanning decades of local and American history in brilliant silver gelatin prints. The exhibition will run from June 23 – July 11, 2008 with an opening reception held Friday, June 27 from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

Biophilia

University of Florida Fine Arts students Chelsey Batson, Jessie Brown, Sydney Graham, Kirian Regan, and Ross Treloar present, “Biophilia”. Biophilia literally means “love of life of living systems”, describing the connections that human beings subconsciously seek with the rest of life. The exhibit will feature drawings, paintings, and sculptures raising awareness about the innate human connection with nature. The exhibition will run from June 9- 20, 2008 with a closing reception held Friday, June 20 from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

Oak Hammock: A Retrospective

Members of the Art League at Oak Hammock, a continuing care retirement community affiliated with the University of Florida, present a retrospective collection of work created by Oak Hammock's residents. Ranging in age from their 60s to 90s, artists hope that visitors will take delight in the quality, the range, and the variety of works created by Oak Hammock artists in their golden years. The exhibition will run from May 29 through June 6, 2008 with an opening reception held Thursday, May 29th from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

12th Annual Survivors of Interpersonal Violence Art Exhibit

The Sexual Battery Committee of the Gainesville Commission on the Status of Women, in conjunction with the UF Counseling Center, present the 12th annual Survivors of Interpersonal Violence art exhibit. This exhibition will be on display from May 12, 2008 through May 23rd, 2008, with a reception held Friday, May 16, from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

PK Yonge Art Honors 2008

Students from the P.K. Yonge High School Studio Visual Arts Program present “PK Yonge Art Honors 2008”, a collection of work created by portfolio students from grades 10, 11, and 12, including drawings, paintings, mixed media, collages, and ceramics. The exhibition will run from April 29- May 8, 2008 with an opening reception held on Thursday, May 1st from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

Rainforest to Reef Reflections

Masters student Carly Voight presents "Rainforest to Reef Reflections", a photographic exhibition revealing her artistic journey from rainforest ridges to coral reefs. This exhibit features vivid digital images taken during travels through Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Galapagos Islands, and St. Martin. Viewers will travel through exotic regions of breathtaking scenery, wildlife, and local culture. The exhibition will run from April 16th, through April 25th, 2008 with an reception to be held on Thursday, April 17th, from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

Visible Changes

Post Baccalaureate students from the University of Florida Advanced Ceramics program, present “Visual Changes,” an intricate collection of creatively sculptural and functional ceramic works, featuring pieces by Tommy Frank, Cassie Ryalls, Falyn Beshwate, John Tucker, and Meghan Sullivan. The exhibition will run from March 31 through April 11, 2008 with a closing reception held on Thursday, April 10th from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

Hairs and Other Animals

Grow your hair, and beards! University of Florida Graphic Design student, Blake Suarez, presents “Hairs and Other Animals,” a unique collection of anthropomorphic character designs, featuring wood cuts, t-shirts, screen-prints, drawings, and more! The exhibition will run from March 17-28, 2008 with an opening reception held on Thursday, March 20th from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

Voices for Peace: The Legacy of Hiroshima & Nagasaki Nuclear Bomb Art Exhibit

The exhibit is in conjunction with the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation’s 63rd anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. It contains photographs and A-bomb drawings by survivors that are based on personal experiences. The exhibit runs from February 26 - March 13 with a reception on February 29, at 7:00 p.m.

Tideswept and Taken Alive

University of Florida Fine Arts Drawing student, Christina Kwan, presents "Tideswept and Taken Alive," a retrospective exhibit featuring introspective mixed media works created through self-exploration and examination. The exhibition will run from February 11-22, 2008 with a closing reception held on Thursday, February 21st from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

A Modest Utopia: Photographic Interpretation of a Modern Florida House

Students from the University of Florida School of Architecture present “A Modest Utopia: Photographic Interpretation of a Modern Florida House,” a photographic essay written in pixels, created under the direction of noted French architectural photographer, Phillippe Ruault. The exhibit features works produced during a three-day workshop exploring theories of architecture and photography within a modern house in Gainesville, FL. The exhibit will be on display January 28 – February 8, 2008. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, January 31 from 7 -9 pm. Refreshments will be served.  

Monuments of a Movement: Children's Reflections on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Evolution of Civil Rights

The University of Florida's Black Graduate Student Organization, in association with Duval Fine Arts Academy, present an exhibit featuring monuments created be elementary students honoring he life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The exhibit will be on display January 20 - 25, 2008. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, January 20 from 4 -6 pm, in conjunction with the annual MLK Banquet in the Reitz Union Ballroom. Refreshments will be served.

A Breadth of Fresh Air: Advanced Drawing Senior Show

Seniors from the University of Florida's Advanced Drawing Program present an exhibit showcasing a large variety of media, including graphite pencil, charcoal, oil pastel, acrylic paint, matte media, spray paint, ink, colored pencil, gauche paint, and more. The exhibit will be on display January 7 - 17, 2008. An opening reception will be held on Friday, January 11, 7 -9 pm. Refreshments will be served.

Florida Fly-Ins: Andros Island in Words and Pictures

Advanced Journalism Practicum's annual exhibition of photojournalism in Andros Island will be on display December 4 - 15, 2007. An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, December 4th, 7 -9 pm. Refreshments will be served.

The Auschwitz Album: The Story of a Transport

The University of Florida Center for Jewish Studies presents, "The Auschwitz Album: The Story of a Transport". The exhibition will run from October 29 through November 30, 2007 with an opening reception held on Sunday, November 4th from 4-6pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be provided.

ADAM: Association of Digital Arts and Media Showcase

ADAM, the University of Florida Association of Digital Arts and Media, presents a showcase of digital art and animations. The exhibition will run from October 8 through October 26, 2007 with an opening reception held on Friday, October 12th from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be provided.

Nobody Said Anything

Brian Patrick and Ashley Schick, University of Florida Printmaking seniors, present, "Nobody Said Anything" a haunting exhibit of black and white photography, paintings, and prints. The exhibition will run from September 23 through October 5, 2007 with an opening reception held on Friday, September 28th from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be provided.

A Certain Physicality

Benjamin A. Lusk, University of Florida Advanced Painting alumni, presents, "A Certain Physicality", a collection of 2-dimensional abstract paintings. The exhibition will run from September 10 through September 21, 2007 with an opening reception held on Friday, September 14th from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be provided.

Southeast Asia: Life Through Images

Casey Brooke Lawson, 4th year UF journalism student, presents photographs documenting her five-month journey through Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. The exhibition will run from August 20 - September 7, 2007 with an opening reception held on Friday, August 24th from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments provided.

The ∑ of Art

UF Staff Member, Eliska Been, will be showcasing mixed media art from July 30th - August 10th, with an opening reception held August 3rd from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served.

Art is Life, Life is Art

UF staff member Patrick Nolan presents digital photos and abstract paintings to be on display July 16 - 27, 2007. AN opening reception will be held on Friday, July 20th from 7-9pm. Event is free and open to the public, refreshments provided.

Survivors Art Exhibit 2007

The annual art exhibit supported by the Gainesville Commission on the Status of Women will be on display April 30 - May 11, 2007. A reception will be held on Friday, May 4th from 7 - 9 pm.

Addressing Iraq: mail art about the war

Submitted art work tackling issues about the war in Iraq will be on display April 16 - April 27, 2007. A closing reception will be held on Friday, April 27th from 7 - 9 pm. Societal Reductions

Ceramic work from UF's Post-Baccalaureate ceramic students, each exploring different ideas of identity through the medium will be on display April 4 - April 13, 2007. A closing reception will be held on Friday, April 13th from 7 - 9 pm. Refreshments will be served.

Cybervisions: Digital Paintings by Achamyeleh Debela

A solo exhibition of digital paintings by Ethiopian-born artist Achamyeleh Debela opens March 12th and runs through to April 1st, 2007. A closing reception will be held on Wednesday, March 28th from 7 - 9 pm. The artist will be giving a gallery talk at 8pm the night of the reception. Discretionary Paths

A photographic compilation of works by UF students Laura Sala, Tess Gresh and Sarah Rupert will be opening March 5th and running through to March 9th 2007. An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, March 6th from 7-9pm. Refreshments will be served.

A digital art exhibition featuring work from Florida Free Culture, a student group committed to expanding the availability of art. The exhibition runs from February 19 - March 2, 2007, with an opening reception on Thursday, February 22 from 7-9pm. Refreshments will be served.

My Bags are Packed

A suitcase installation showcase by UF alumni Frank Curtis will be on display at "the gallery" on the 2nd floor, J. Wayne Reitz Union from February 5 - 16, 2007. An opening reception will be held Friday, February 9th, from 7-9pm. Refreshments will be served.

Conventional Wisdoms

The senior class of University of Florida's Creative Photography majors presents Conventional Wisdoms, a collection of color and black & white creative photography. Exhibition will be on display January 22 to February 2, 2007. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2007.

Syria: A photographic journey through the capital of Islamic culture and beyond

Color photography exploring the culture, architecture and people of Syria from UF student Mujahid Abdulrahim will be on display January 9 - 19, 2007. An opening reception will be held on Friday, January 12th from 7 - 9pm.

Measures of Time: Photography by David Burnett, opens October 30th and runs until November 17th. Exhibition highlights a 35 year career in photojournalism. An opening reception will be held on Monday, November 6th from 7 - 9pm. Refreshments will be served.

No cheese for cheapskates

No Cheese for Cheapskates: Work by UF art students Whitney Hackett, Vanessa Cunto, Kirian Reagan and Juliane Elin will be opening October 16 and running until October 27. Work will include oil paintings, photo collage, drawings and multi media designs. An opening reception will be held on October 20th from 7-9pm. Refreshments will be served.

The Absence of Color: A Visual Xperience in Black & White

Black and White photography representing aspects of African American history and culture as well as a color photography series entitled "Color of Love" by Daniel Henry, UF student, opens on September 26th and runs until October 13th. A reception will be held on Friday, Septemebr 29th from 7-9pm. Refreshments will be served.

The Meaning of Life

Meaning of Life: Student photography from UF's Honor Program's IDH3931 Creativity and the Journey to One's Self, instructor Lola Haskins, opens September 11th and runs until September 22nd. An opening reception will be held on September 15th, from 7 - 9 pm. Refreshments will be served.

Art work form the staff members of the Reitz Union's Arts & Craft Center will be on exhibit from August 21 to September 9 in "the gallery". The photographic works of Marcus A Tanner, UF Alumni, will be on display from 6/5/2006 to 6/16/2006. An opening reception will be held Friday, 6/9/2006 from 7pm to 9pm. Refreshments will be served.

Digital Explorations

Dan Dobson, local artist and UF alumni, experiments wih digital collages in this solo show. The show opens on May 15th and runs until June 2nd. An opening reception will be held May 26th from 7 to 9pm.

Survivors' Art Exhibit

This show will be on display from May 1, 2006 to May 12, 2006. The opening reception is May 5, 2006 from 7-9pm.

In its tenth year, the Survivors’ Art Exhibit is a unique showcase that underscores the survivor’s journey, from initial victimization to resolution. Through a variety of media: painting, drawing, watercolor, photography, poetry, and sculpture, survivors create personal stories of domestic violence, family violence, sexual abuse, sexual assault, child abuse, spiritual abuse, and other forms of personal violence.
