Purpose: Alpha Kappa Delta is an International Sociology Honors Society. It was founded in 1920 at the University of Southern California for the purposes of stimulating scholarship and promoting the scientific study of society. Here at the University of Florida we are the Beta Chapter. Our purpose is to "Investigate humanity for the sake of service.” In addition, AKD promotes and encourages academic and professional development for those majoring in sociology.
Activities: AKD holds bi-monthly meetings. One meeting is a formal meeting where a speaker comes in and discusses some sociological related issues, including issues such as sexuality and racial and ethnic relations. Our other meeting is dedicated to a social aspect of our organization, in which our members have the opportunity to get to know each and intellectually discuss various social issues. Lastly, as a sociological organization, Alpha Kappa Delta is driven to serve our community- to go beyond the intellectual discussions of social issues and become active in attempting to resolve some of these issues that take place right here in our community.
