Educating Leaders for a Global Community
Categories: Medicine
Purpose: The purpose of the AHMA is to transform healthcare so that it addresses physical, environmental, mental, emotional, spiritual and social health of individuals, thereby contributing to the healing of people using a holistic approach to medicine. We are committed to educating medical students and others about the philosophy that these biopsychosocial, environmental, and spiritual aspects of life are closely interconnected and important in delivering the proper treatment to patients. In accordance with the mission of the AHMA, the University of Florida College of Medicine Student Chapter of the American Holistic Medical Association seeks to educate health care students about holistic medicine as well as expose students to the practice of holistic medicine. Future physicians will be confronted with a vast array of complementary and alternative practices that their patients seek out on their own. Furthermore, biomedical research investigation into the basis and validity of many purportedly health-promoting practices--ranging from dietary to herbal to spiritual--is intensifying. The UF Chapter of the American Holistic Medical Association will prepare medical students to guide their future patients in distinguishing beneficial therapeis, using the latest biomedical science as a guide.
