Purpose: 1a. To provide an open and supportive environment for the free discussion and analysis of religion and nonreligion alike. 1b. To provide students with the opportunity to meet and discuss religious, philosophical, ethical, political, and other issues in an environment free from the pressure of reaching a certain conclusion (for instance, whether for or against the existence of a god). 2. To promote skepticism, rational thought, critical inquiry, science, and the worth of the individual. 3. To ensure the separation of church and state.
Activities: DESCRIPTION: Gator Freethought is a registered student organization at UF which provides people of any religious background the opportunity to meet and discuss religion and nonreligion alike. You needn't identify with any particular religious or nonreligious beliefs in order to join. You need only identify as a freethinker—someone who is willing to think freely about his or her own beliefs and those of others. Many of our members self-identify as non-religious, secular, naturalist, humanist, freethinking, atheist, agnostic, ignostic—but many others as Christian and Islamic.
ACTIVITIES: We meet every 2-3 weeks during the school year to hear a guest speaker on some topic of interest, and usually go out for food and drinks afterwards. In addition, our members usually offer to host get-togethers every few weeks for the group. We also host at least one campus-wide event per semester--usually a debate between or lecture from professional authors or orators. Lastly, we cooperate with a few religious groups on campus to co-host interfaith discussion panels. To stay abreast of our activities, join our facebook group here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2427917203
MEETINGS: The format of our meetings usually alternates between i) formal lectures (20 min) by guest speakers, followed by Q&A; ii) semiformal discussions, in which we have an open dialogue without moderation, but attempt to stay on topic; iii) purely social events involving food/drink/whatever. Our current meeting schedule can be found here: http://www.gatorfreethought.org/2006/02/meetings.html
