About Student Organizations

Student organizations are an essential part of the University of Florida community and are an integral part of the total academic program. The presence of a diverse group of organizations is in the best interest of the University and its students. Such organizations foster valuable experiences for students that lead to significant learning and development and create a sense of belonging.

Student organizations provide a valuable service to the University community by promoting leadership development, community spirit, activism, public service, and social and cultural interaction. Each year the close to 830 student organizations sponsor conferences, seminars, lectures, debates, cultural and social events, and fine arts programs. These activities allow UF students to meet and interact with local, state, nationally and internationally renowned scholars, artists, politicians, academicians and other professionals. Student organization members also spend countless volunteer hours each academic year participating in service projects for campus and community efforts.

Types of Organizations

All student organizations must completer registration paperwork with the Center for Student Activities and Involvement each year in order to be registered at the University of Florida and to take advantage of all available facilities and services. Benefits provided by UF to registered student organizations include, but are not limited to:

  1. Regular use of University facilities: buildings, grounds, services (some may have fees for use)
  2. Ability to request funds from Student Government or its designated student organizations
  3. Access to CSAI staff and resources.
  4. Participation in the Student Organization Fair
  5. Access to UF technology, including grove websites and listservs
  6. Opportunities to participate in ongoing leadership development programming

There are four types of student organizations at UF:

  1. Registered Student Organization - General – The majority of organizations at UF fall in to this category. These organizations are formed by any group of students currently enrolled at UF sharing a common interest and/or goal and are entirely student run. Registered Student Organizations must have ten members including a president and treasurer, an approved constitution and a faculty adviser and must complete annual registration paperwork and training with the Center for Student Activities and Involvement to maintain access to university benefits.

    The following non-discrimination policy applies to Registered Student Organizations:

    "Student organizations that wish to register with the Center for Student Activities and Involvement (CSAI) must agree that they will not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, political opinions or affiliations, or veteran status as protected under the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act.

    A student organization whose primary purpose is religious will not be denied registration as a Registered Student Organization on the ground that it limits membership or leadership positions to students who share the religious beliefs of the organization. The University has determined that this accommodation of religious belief does not violate its nondiscrimination policy."


    *Some Registered Student Organizations-General may choose to specify as honorary or service
    1. Honorary - Honorary organizations encourage and honor superior scholarship, service and leadership achievement. With so many societies out there, it is difficult to determine who is legitimate and who is not. There are typically two types of honorary organizations: professional honoraries and leadership/service honoraries.

      Student organizations may be listed in the Center for Student Activities and Involvement database as Honoraries if they meet the following criteria:

      1. Their organizations are members of a national sanctioning organization such as the Association of College Honor Societies or the Professional Fraternity Association
      2. Or they have been approved as an Honorary Society by the University of Florida Honors Program and meet their criteria for recruitment.
      3. Or are sponsored academic honorary student organizations of a University of Florida academic department or college.

    2. Service - Currently registered student organizations wanting to be identified as Service Organizations with the Center for Student Activities and Involvement must meet the following criteria:

      1. Complement the University’s mission of research, teaching and service
      2. Their organization’s primary mission is to provide volunteer/community service to the campus, community, and national organizations.
      3. Meet all general requirements to be a registered student organization in the Center for Student Activities and Involvement and secure a Center for Leadership and Service signature on the annual registration form (specifically that of Dr. Colette Taylor, Assistant Dean of Students, 202 Peabody Hall, 392-1261).
      4. Participate in one Community Service Orientation session a year (Call Center for Leadership and Service ext. 4 for information on how to make a reservation or check here
      5. Report the number of service hours their organization does annually through the CSAI student organization registration process
      6. Provide the Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) proof of a request for a current Memorandum of Understanding for any non-profit, regional or national service organization affiliation and assist the CLS in acquiring the MOU if necessary
      7. Plan and implement at least four CLS approved community service projects per semester and provide documentation of each event to the CLS by March 15th each academic year
      8. Working with children: Directly working with and serving children in the community may present some additional issues to consider and address. You will need to abide by the guidelines established by your host organization/school. This may involve pre-service orientation/screening; background checks or fingerprinting; following policies regarding the number of children designated to one volunteer, the nature of activities, transportation issues, etc. Be sure to clarify these policies and procedures with your host organization and clearly articulate them to all of your group members. If you do need to be fingerprinted or obtain a background check in order to volunteer, contact the Center for Leadership and Service (below) for further information

    Registered Service Organizations may also apply to be affiliated with the University of Florida Center for Leadership and Service. To do so, the organization must show proof of:

    1. Undertaking service consistent with the Center for Leadership and Service stated mission and Guiding Principles
    2. Contributing to public service education of group members through well-planned activities and reflection as recommended in the Community Service Project Planning Guide
    3. Conducting fundraising activities consistent with Center for Student Activities and Involvement policies for Student Activities and organizations
    4. Registering and updating your organization's information annually with the Center for Student Activities and Involvement
    5. Providing information each academic term regarding your group's activities and membership numbers for the CLS archives.
    6. Working collaboratively with other student organizations, exploring potential connections and sharing ideas and resources as appropriate
    7. Keeping open communication with community partners to ensure consistency with community needs
    8. Operating within established and stated CSAI policies and procedures

    Forming a New Service Organization

    Applications for new service student organizations should be submitted to the Center for Leadership and Service 1 to 3 weeks in advance for review. Submitting an application to CLS for affiliation does not guarantee a service organization designation or an affiliation with CLS. To be identified by the Center for Student Activities and Involvement as a service organization, the organization must:

    1. Complement the University’s mission of research, teaching and service
    2. Have a clear purpose
    3. Demonstrate an unmet need that is not duplicated by another service student group
    4. Agree to the criteria for service organizations as defined earlier
    5. Demonstrate a plan for sustainability for a two-three year period
    6. Receive a signature of approval from the Center for Leadership and Service

    A registered student organization may need to focus its membership on a single-gender population in order to fulfill its educational mission. When such a necessity exists, the student organization must submit a constitution for review and approval to the Center for Student Activities and Involvement. The constitution must clearly articulate the educational mission of the organization and how single-gender membership is essential to fulfilling that mission. In addition, the organization must formally link itself to a registered student organization with a similar educational mission and whose membership includes or is open to the other gender. The constitution of each organization must contain explicit language documenting the formal relationship linking the two. Upon approval by the Center for Student Activities and Involvement, two or more single-gender organizations may be linked to one organization whose membership includes or is open to the other gender. The ability of a linked organization to maintain registered student organization status requires concurrent and continuous registration of the mutually linked organization.

  2. Registered Student Organization - Sponsored - This category of student organizations consist of groups that serve as a function of a University department or have obtained sponsorship from such a University department. Sponsorship may be granted to those organizations whose purpose and activities are in accord with the mission of the sponsoring department. Sponsorship requires support, endorsement, supervision of and assumption of responsibility for the action and activities of the sponsored organization. Sponsorship may not be extended to groups involved in political or religious activities or projects for private gain. Registered Student Organizations must have ten members including a president and treasurer, an approved constitution and a faculty adviser and must complete annual registration paperwork and training with the Center for Student Activities and Involvement to maintain access to university benefits

  3. Registered Student Organization - Sport Clubs Council - Sports Club Council registered student organizations are defined as groups that are part of the department of Recreational Sports, Sport Club Council, and the organization must obtain approval from the Sports Club Coordinator, Department of Recreational Sports. All Sport Clubs are competitive in nature, with an emphasis on participation, skill development and student leadership. Registered Student Organizations must have ten members including a president and treasurer, an approved constitution and a faculty adviser and must complete annual registration paperwork and training with the Center for Student Activities and Involvement to maintain access to university benefits.

  4. Registered Student Organization -Social Sorority/Fraternity - Social sororities and fraternities are self-supporting organizations. Most social sororities and fraternities are single sex organizations; while social sororities and fraternities may not discriminate on the basis of age, color, creed, handicap, inter/national origin, race, religion, or sexual orientation, University policy and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 do permit their selection of members on the basis of sex.

    Social sororities and fraternities are responsible for abiding by the policies, regulations and procedures of the University, as well as their Inter/National office, the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Affairs (OSFA), and their governing council if they are to maintain their rights as a registered student organization. No social sorority or fraternity may exist at the University without approval from the OSFA.
    *Social sororities and fraternities cannot request funds from Student Government.

Registering a Student Organization

Students are free to join and participate in registered student organizations. All student organizations and groups are subject to the rules of the University of Florida, including the Student Conduct Code and Academic Honesty Guidelines. Student organizations are encouraged to register in order to take full advantage of available University resources (including possible eligibility for funding and priority use of University facilities) pursuant to applicable University rules, regulations, and guidelines, including the Student Organization Handbook. Registering A New Organization

To register a new organization with the Center for Student Activities and Involvement, the group must:

  1. Select a name that is not in use by another student organization registered at UF.
  2. Identify a purpose and describe the activities the group will organize to fulfill this purpose. Note: We will not register a group whose purpose involves performing activities or services already offered by university functions. For example, we will not register a group whose purpose is to provide resume critiques and interview skills training as those services are offered by the Career Resource Center.
  3. Have ten members who are registered UF students. One member must be assigned as the primary contact to whom all communication about the organization will be directed. (For CSAI purposes, this person will be listed as the President in all forms and documentation.) A second member must be listed as the contact for finances to whom all communication regarding the organization’s financial matters will be directed. (For CSAI purposes, this person will be listed as the Treasurer in all forms and documentation.) The name and phone number of the President and Treasurer will be listed on the Student Organizations website in the organization’s description and can be viewed by the public.
  4. Have a faculty advisor, unless the organization is a Social Sorority or Fraternity as defined by the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Affairs, who meets CSAI requirements. See About Faculty Advisors
  5. Complete a Student Organization Registration form for the current academic year (which can be downloaded from the web here or can be picked up from the CSAI.) The registration form is to be filled out and signed by the president, treasurer, and faculty advisor.
  6. Submit a constitution that meets the CSAI guidelines, unless the organization has an approved constitution on file from the 2008-2009 registration period (the constitution checklist form can be downloaded from the web http://www.union.ufl.edu/involvement/studentOrgs/resources).
  7. Turn in a copy of the Organization’s constitution that meets the University of Florida Constitution Guidelines.
  8. Once the Student Organization Registration form has been turned in to the CSAI, the president must complete the online registration for the organization at http://www.union.ufl.edu/involvement/studentorgs/register. Here, the names and UFID numbers for all officers must be entered.
  9. Student Organizations may register April 15-September 15 (Fall Cycle) and then from January 1-January 15 (Spring Cycle) only.

Re-Registering An Organization Annually

Registered organizations must re-register each academic year with the Center for Student Activities and Involvement. Annual registration for the coming year will occur between April and September. All registered organizations will remain active during this time and will maintain access to University benefits. Organizations that do not complete the annual registration by the set date in September (determined each year) will be deactivated and will forfeit University benefits until re-registration is completed.

  1. Annual registration paperwork for the coming academic year will be available on April 15.
  2. Registered organizations can chose to re-register for the coming academic year April 15-September 15 without forfeiting their active registration status.
  3. All organizations that have not completed the registration paperwork for the coming academic year by the set date in September will be deactivated and will forfeit University benefits, such as reserving space on campus, hosting events, receiving SG funds, etc.
  4. Organizations that have been deactivated can regain registered status by completing the annual registration paperwork during the Spring Registration cycle January 1-January 15.

Authority for Registration

The University reserves the right to register all student organizations. The Center for Student Activities and Involvement serves as the University registrant of all student organizations and maintains current information on each registered student organization, its officers or authorized representatives, its purpose and its faculty advisor.

It is the policy of the University of Florida that registered student organizations shall be in full compliance with all federal and state nondiscrimination and equal opportunity laws, orders and regulations. Student organizations registered at UF will not practice any discrimination against a member or prospective member on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, disability, unfavorable discharge from the military, or status as a disabled veteran of the Vietnam era, except specifically exempted by law. Discrimination based on sexual orientation is prohibit ed by the University policy, but not by law. (Please refer to the University Non-discrimination Policy for more information).

A student organization whose primary purpose is religious will not be denied registration as a Registered Student Organization on the ground that it limits membership or leadership positions to students who share the religious beliefs of the organization. The University has determined that this accommodation of religious belief does not violate its nondiscrimination policy."

All student organizations are under the jurisdiction of the Director of Student Activities and Involvement. The responsibility for establishing and enforcing policy concerning organizations and activities, including the requirement that they function in accordance with their constitutions, is vested in the Center for Student Activities and Involvement. All student organizations (both registered and sponsored) are subject to the rules and regulations governing the University, including, but not limited, to the Code of Student Conduct and Academic Honesty Guidelines. Information from the Student Guide is used and referred to throughout this handbook. The Center for Student Activities and Involvement strongly recommends that all student leaders and student organizations become familiar with the sections of the Student Guide that refer to student organizations. A student wanting to contact an organization can readily find that information on the Center for Student Activities and Involvement website.
