All student organizations, except sororities and fraternities, are required to have an approved faculty advisor. Social sororities and fraternities must have an approved chapter advisor through Sorority and Fraternity Affairs. An Advisor is an integral part of every student organization. The role of the advisor is to counsel and serve as a resource to the students and the student organization. Student organization advisors have three broad functions:
The role of an advisor is an important one and may vary with the organization's needs. The scope of an organization's activities, the effectiveness of its officers, the time commitments of the advisor and other factors determine the nature of an advisor's involvement with the group. Advisors should never consider themselves as only a signatory on registration forms.
Full time, salaried faculty, professional or approved staff members are eligible to serve as student organization advisors so long as they are not on leave during their term; student teaching assistants and some adjunct professors and non-professional staff are not eligible to serve as advisors. Sponsored student organizations may have a faculty advisor in addition to a staff designated advisor.
It is important to note that one indicator of student satisfaction at an institute of higher education is out of class interaction with faculty members.
